Turquoise Tortoise Gallery

My family and three previous generations of my family have lived in Arizona and Arizona Territory. My grandfather and great-grandfather were blacksmiths. I grew up in Tucson with a love of horses and the desert. Several years as a cowhand in the Aravaipa canyon in the '50's taught me the ways of the animals and the plants. Countless hours in the saddle following cattle and game trails honed my senses to the patters and balance necessary for these plants and animals to thrive in the intense desert conditions.
I realize now that this period in my life was very important, allowing me time to observe, explore and learn the smallest details, so that i could create these forms that would tell others about my way of viewing the dessert.
Later at the University of Arizona, I studied anthropology and animal science. However, shaping and forging steel came naturally to me, so that was the direction I followed.
the plans, animals, and the spirit of the desert are what i love and do best. I try to capture a feeling of balance and harmony through my design as I create a "timeless" desert out of forged steel.
