Wolfgang Vaatz
Painting started the art career of the Namibian born artist, creating water sculptures followed. "Now", Wolfgang comments, "I am back painting again." Both, paintings and sculptures, draw from the same source of experience. The subject of the paintings is mainly the 'ordinary' Southwest landscape which has not found its way into tourist guide boods. Ia am not interested in copying on canvas a particular sight seeing icon or in changing them in bold 'contemporary' colors or shapes. The Southwest has far more to offer than the famous. There is the familiar, 'ordinary' arid landscape that is spectacular with often overlooked distinctive, subtle details, the way the ground is shaped by the elements, laying out 'its story' uncovered. Tis 'story' can be read and when I paint I like to see myself as interpreter to halp the landscape tell its story. For me, it is important to translate the tranquility, vastness, and richness of this landscape. This aird landscape can offer so much if we learn to see and to appreciate it."
